I keep hearing people describe wines as “dry” but I am not sure what that means. Is it about the taste? The texture? I had a Sauvignon Blanc last night and my friend said it was dry, but it tasted fruity to me. Can a wine be both fruity and dry?
Great question! “Dry” simply means the wine has very little residual sugar — most of the grape sugar was converted to alcohol during fermentation. A wine can absolutely be dry AND fruity. Fruit flavours come from the grape variety and aromas, not from sugar. Your Sauvignon Blanc was likely bone dry but had tropical fruit aromas. Think of it like smelling a mango versus eating candy — same fruit character, but no sweetness.
